Kathryn Bruner James received her bachelor’s degree in political science from Albion College in 2002 and her Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) School of Law in 2007. She received awards for her work with the UDM chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and for receiving the highest grade in her Civil Rights Litigation class. While in law school, Kathryn worked as a law clerk for: the State Appellate Defenders Office; Pitt, McGehee, Mirer, Palmer & Rivers, P.C. (now Pitt, McGehee, Palmer & Rivers); and Julie H. Hurwitz, P.C.

Since receiving her law license from the State Bar of Michigan in December 2007, Kathryn has been admitted to practice law in the U.S. Eastern District of Michigan, the U.S. Western District of Michigan, the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. She became a partner at Goodman Hurwitz & James, P.C. in 2017.

Kathryn grew up in the Metro Detroit area. She and her husband, Joshua James, have lived in Ferndale since 2002. The couple welcomed their beloved dog, Hank, to their family in 2015. The family grew once again in 2016 with the birth of their daughter.

Kathryn has been deeply engaged in the City of Ferndale, including serving on: Ferndale City Council (2020-2023), where she established Oakland County’s first citizen police advisory and review board; the Civil Service Board in 2019; and the Police Open Data Task Force in 2017, among many other activities for the community. Kathryn was recognized as Ferndale’s Citizen of the Year in 2015 and a Diversity Champion by the Race Relations & Diversity Task Force in 2016. Kathryn has also been involved with the Detroit & Michigan Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, the Metro Detroit chapter of Advocates & Leaders for Police and Community Trust (“ALPACT”), and Citizens for a Fair Ferndale.

All three partners at Goodman Hurwitz & James were finalists for Trial Lawyer of the Year from Public Justice in 2022 for their work on the original Flint Water Cases. Super Lawyers rating service has rated Kathryn a Rising Star from 2013 through 2017 and a Super Lawyer in 2021 and 2022. Read more about their selection criteria on their Website.
